Electric Butterfly came into being when the unique vocalist and
songwriter Sally Doherty began working with the gifted musician
and producer Colin Elliot.
Based in Sheffield, their cool left-field pop sound is exotic and
reveals glimpses of Sally’s life-long passion for Celtic folksong,
Brazilian bossa nova, French chanson, South American bolero
and the songs of Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, and her love of
incredible singers such as crazy Peruvian princess Yma Sumac and
the smooth and seductive Chet Baker.

After studying fine art and experimental film-making (her first
short film was inspired by finding a dead man one night in a local
stream) Sally then wrote the music for an unusual BBC television
documentary, ‘Empire of Death’ and for several experimental
radio dramas. As well as a few collaborations, including with Italian
dance outfit Planet Funk and Richard Hawley, Sally has released
collections of her songs on her own label and in Europe, “rare
gems drifting around in different parts of the world”.
Colin is the long-time producer, musician, engineer and orchestral
arranger with Richard Hawley. He came from an orchestral background
and then worked as a session player for numerous artists including
Finlay Quaye, Womack and Womack, Boy George and many others. He
developed his own studio where he produces, engineers and performs.
Together they have made a haunting, uplifting and musically outstanding
collection.

D-Side magazine (France):
Ikonen (Germany), English translation:
Sally Doherty’s solo album ‘Electric Butterfly’, which the singer is also presenting as a songwriter, comes across as somewhat more conventional (than Goodbye Ivan)… those who already know her earlier albums would probably see a logical development here. It seems almost as though she has brought her experiences together and developed them along with guitarist Richard Hawley and brought them to maturity. In any case, ‘Electric Butterfly’ broadens the spectrum in the direction of Chanson and Bolero, doesn’t shy away from simple pop harmonies and occasionally plays with Jazz gestures… What comes out would excite fans of Goldfrapp…
