3 April 2008: ‘Black is the Colour’ reissue (including bonus track)

Black is the Colour reissueThis is a limited edition digitally remastered reissue which quickly sold out on its first release in 2002. It’s now available again! Beautifully filmic, these performances of folk songs from Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Mexico and France have a dark and timeless quality. This reissue also includes a bonus track, a stunning version of the Sandy Denny classic ‘Who knows where the time goes’.

Sally’s warm and pure voice is sometimes accompanied by just Spanish guitar and flute and at others by piano, rich cellos and violins.

“Quite unlike any other ‘folk’ record currently out there. The restrained use of Spanish guitars, Indian percussion, piano, cellos, clarinet and Sally’s occasional Eastern vocal intonations invest the album with a spiritual and soulful hue. Dark and haunting, ‘Black is the Colour’ is as absorbing as it is beautiful”—Get Rhythm, UK

”Only a voice as sublime as that of Sally Doherty’s has the ability to take on ‘Black is the Colour’: a superb collection”—Blow Up, Italy

”A precious gift to all lovers of stirring music and essential purity. My special recommendation”—Zinnober, Germany

Tracklisting: Black is the ColourLos bilbilicos • I Held My Love • The Praities • The Selkie of Sule Skerry • My Lagan LoveLa llorona • Neither Fire Bright Nor Candle Light • L’on dit q’amors est dolce chose • The Bonny Boy • Requiem Waltz • The Low Lowlands of HollandWho Knows Where the Time Goes (bonus track)

‘Second Time Around’, the new album from Sally Doherty Quartet is now available!

The CD will be launched by a mini tour of Chesterfield, Sheffield, Edale, Leeds, Manchester and Ambleside. Details on the live page. Come along!

This album from Sally’s latin jazz band involved Sally singing (of course), Piero Tucci on piano and accordion, Colin Elliot on double bass and percussion and Phil Johnson on drums. Guest musicians were Shez Sheridan on Spanish guitar, Liz Hanks on cello and Donald Grant on fiddle. The extra track recorded with Donald is not from the original session but from a session recorded in Scotland where Sally joined Donald along with folk harp, double bass and the 10-piece Red Skies String Ensemble.

4 September 2007: Sally appears on the latest single and album by Richard Hawley

If you want to hear Sally’s contributions to the new Richard Hawley album ‘Lady’s Bridge’ you can. It was released on August the 20th and is currently at number 6 in the official UK album charts. She sings ‘aquamarina vocals’ on the single ‘Tonight the Streets Are Ours’, which has been going down very well on BBC Radio 2 for the last month, and she also sings with Richard on ‘The Sun Refused to Shine’.

5 July 2007: news

Hello! Yes I'm still alive! I thought it was about time I told you what I've been up to seeing as you have the decency to come and have a look!

Electric Butterfly will be available on iTunes very soon! It now has its own myspace page www.myspace.com/electricbutterflymusic. I'll keep you informed!

I had a few invitations recently that I happily accepted. The first was from Richard Hawley, who asked me to sing a duet with him on his new album ‘Lady’s Bridge’, which will come out on the 20th August on Mute. I then got another call first thing on a Monday morning (pre-cup of tea!) to go and sing on another of his songs… some high Hawaiian-style vocals (whatever they are… I imagined!) so of course I did and demanded caffeine on arrival!

The other invitation was from an amazing Scottish fiddle player and composer called Donald Grant, who asked me to choose a Spanish language song for him to arrange. I chose ‘Noche de Ronda’, a beautiful and dramatic Mexican waltz. He arranged it for a string section of about 10 (loads of them anyway), folk harp, double bass and fiddle. It will be part of his folk album to be released later this year, I’ll let you know.

Finally I spent two days in the studio with my latin jazz band and recorded my second album with that project. On piano and accordion is the talented Piero (fingers on fire) Tucci, and I had a wicked rhythm section of Colin Elliot on double bass and Phil Johnson on drums. It also involves some guest performers; Shez Sheridan on spanish guitar and Liz Hanks on cello. It will be available in the Autumn!

Oh and ‘On the Outside’ is now available on iTunes.

That's enough for now!

Sally x
